Things dont always go to plan

Sleeping for England

Soooo, my plan for going to get food and see the city by night didnt quite go to plan. Once I layed down, gravity had me welded to the bed and I realised just how tired I was.

So the new plan was to get up early instead after 10 hours sleep and get out and about. New plan is going well, it's 6.30 and Im awake and been awake for about an hour, its just starting to get light. Apparantly its 75 degrees now and will hit 95 later, def need to sun cream today. I also have some massive bites on my back which I think I picked up in DC by the reflective lake as there were lots of little flies! They dont itch so thats OK.

Just got an email from Rich, they seem to be having a good time in Zante and like the resort which is good. Theres 8 hours between us at the moment so its a little difficult to catch each other.

Not sure what Im going to do today, think I am going to go get breakfast (I dont seem to have hardly eaten for days) and check out and then spend the day doing stuff. Im getting the bus to New York at about 6.00 so got to get it all done by then. I wonder if it will be busy being a Monday.

I am quite enjoying being on my own, not having much time to think about stuff as so busy and writing this is helping me feel like I am sharing it with people. Its also really easy because there is no language barrier. Ive never noticed this as a problem in Europe, but its just that little bit easier when you know you can ask people questions. They still cant understand me, but neither can Bristol!!!...

Big philly style

from average to luxury and regal to normal

After reading some of my book and then sleeping for a while, I stepped off the bus into hot hot heat. I thought it was hot in Washington, but this is much worse! The weather forecast on tv said it was 91 degrees! It was 3pm-ish and I was flagging with my bags.

Straight away there was a difference. The were no skyscraper type buildings in Washington, while in Philly there are. People seem much less friendly, but maybe most the people in Washington were tourists and this is just more true to life.

I had a mooch around 30th street station and got a drink, then got the metro downdown. I saw a few crazies and also it seems a lot less well kept. There are no escalators...boooo...and I was pretty much the only white person on a full subway train. Took me a little while to get my barings but found the hotel.

When I arrived the people I booked it with hadn't passed on my reservation...arghhhhhh...but all was ok as the man said he would sort it and upgraded my room for the incovenience...result! The hotel is gorgeous, a listed building and lovely. Much nicer than the one in DC, which was cheep and cheerful.

I'm going to relax and recharge for a few hours then head out for something nice to eat and maybe a cheeky beverage!

I've also got very pink shoulders, deffo need sun cream tomorrow!

I am also loving how everywhere has free wi-fi, england take note!

Today I have had to face the fact that I am not wonderwoman, due to everything being spaced out.

I left the hotel and headed to Arlington cemetary (take two), apparanttly yesterday I went in the complete opposite direction which is why I got confused!IMG_0280

The place is massive, it takes 45 minutes to get round it on a bus without getting off so that gives you the scale of it! There are 1000s of graves which gives you a feeling of how much people have lost due to war. JFK is also burried here along with Jackie Onasis. I got a similar feeling of sadness as I did at Auschwitz and Ground Zero in New York.

I also took a detour past Iwo Jima statue, which was massive and really quite impressive.

I then headed back to the hotel to 17th to get some pics of the views, but there were buildings in the way, then I checked out.

Lugging my 21kg bag plus another heavy bag is NOT fun in the sweltering heat (and I forgot to factor up today). Even less fun when the bloody escalators don't work.

I got the metro to the Pentagon and another 9/11 memorial! Then back on the metro towards the bus station.IMG_0334

Pretty tired in the heat, its about 35 degrees I reckon and its taking a lot of effort to keep going.

I must apologise for caving to what is Starbucks. Baring in mind, I hadnt eaten hardly since I left UK and had a bus to catch, it was the first place open and I needed to grab something. A toastie, blueberry muffin and passion iced tea with lemonade hit the spot.

I now find myself on the Megabus to Philly. Amazingly it cost $1 and has free wi-fi and a Will Smith film playing...how cliche!.....

I slept OK and longer than my alarm, but I still got about 6 hours. The sun is just rising beyond the buildings. Its now just after 7.

I have to get the bus at 12 and got a few places to visit before then, so a quick shower and get dressed and then off to be back about 10-11 to get to the bus station. Thinking about getting a taxi there to give me a bit more time and my bag is heavy, even when pulling it!

PS the tv has so many channels of crap! Currently Joan Rivers is selling leg tanning stuff, shes hardly an advert for stuff!
